The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning men who use Nolvadex to have an increased risk of breast cancer in women, researchers said on Tuesday.
“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not received any warning from men who have taken this medicine,” Dr. David Stewart, senior director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told a news conference.
The new warning was issued after the FDA and other agencies reviewed data from two large studies on the risk of breast cancer in women.
One of the studies, involving over 1,600 women, looked at the risk of breast cancer in women taking tamoxifen, the active ingredient in Nolvadex, for five years.
The other, looking at a placebo, looked at a placebo to prevent cancer. The results showed that men who took the drug were less likely to develop breast cancer.
The FDA said the study’s results were not considered statistically significant.
“We think the information provided in the data is flawed and the findings may not be clinically meaningful,” Stewart said. “This is not a new warning, and this is not a new decision.”
Dr. Mark Thompson, a professor of cancer medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a leader in the F. D. A.’s review of the data, said the FDA has been monitoring the data for several months.
The new warning is part of a broader review of cancer treatment safety that is expected to include more studies in the next three months.
“The FDA has issued warnings to doctors and patients in the past about the serious side effects that are common among tamoxifen,” Dr. Thompson said.
“We are reviewing these data for what is a very serious problem,” he said.
The FDA’s review also includes data from studies of people taking Nolvadex to prevent breast cancer in women who have undergone previous, similar surgery.

The FDA is reviewing the results of the first two studies and will include more information in the latest FDA advisory committee report.
The FDA said the new warning was a response to a warning issued by the FDA in March by a group of scientists from the drug company, AstraZeneca, which has received the drug from the US government.
The warning has not been officially approved by the FDA but has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The agency said it is reviewing the results of the new study with an emphasis on the risk of breast cancer in women and the use of tamoxifen.
“This is a review of a large number of studies which have looked at the risk of breast cancer in women taking tamoxifen,” Stewart said.

It is contraindicated to use this medicine in women who are with a history of deep vein thrombosis because the use of tamoxifen increases the incidence of thromboembolic events including deep vein thrombosis,
Endometrial dysplasia
Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with a history of gynecological abnormalities because the use of tamoxifen changes the endometrium such as hyperplasia, polyps, and endometrial cancer.
Hepatic dysfunction
Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with a history of hepatic function because the use of tamoxifen alter the liver enzymes and cause severe hepatic injuries such as fatty liver, cholestasis, hepatitis, and hepatic necrosis.
